Het project 'Dancing Squirrel' is een eerbetoon aan mijn opa, die in 2018 is overleden. Samen met oma had hij een boshuisje dat in het Eekhoornbos lag.

Opa had veel oud verroest gereedschap, bouten, schroeven en scharnieren liggen in het huisje. Daarvan heb ik een driedimensionale eekhoorn gemaakt.

Basis

Ik begon met het geraamte als basis. Ik heb dat van aluminiumdraad gemaakt, omdat het makkelijk te buigen is. Met epoxylijm heb ik daarna het gereedschap aan elkaar vast kunnen lijmen.

Sleutelringen

Wat ik erg lastig vond waren de handjes. Ik wist lang niet waar ik die van zou maken. Ik ging al voor de zoveelste keer door mijn opa's gereedschapskist heen om te kijken of ik wat bruikbaars kon vinden. Ik moest de perfectionist in mezelf weer even los laten. Het mocht allemaal wat abstracter zijn. Toen ik zo begon te denken, kwam ik op het idee om het van sleutelringen te maken.

'Alsof hij danst'

Ik heb de eekhoorn met een scharnier en ijzerdraad geprobeerd vast te maken op een stukje hout. Daarna wilde ik hem met epoxylijm helemaal vast zetten. Tijdens het drogen is hij wat scheef gaan staan, waardoor mijn moeder meteen zei: 'Het lijkt nu net alsof hij danst'. Hierdoor ben ik op de naam gekomen.

Ik heb het stukje hout toch aan een kant verhoogd, waardoor hij wat minder scheef staat.

The project ‘Dancing Squirrel’ is an hommage to my grandpa, who passed away in 2018. He and grandma own a little cabin in the woods. The cabin is called De Eekhoorn (The Squirrel).

Grandpa had a lot of used and rusty tools, bolts, hinges and scrap metal in his shed at the cabin. I have created a 3D squirrel, using those items.

The base

I started with a frame made of aluminum wire, because it's easy to shape. I glued the metal pieces, using epoxy glue, to the wire frame.

Key rings

The hands/paws turned out to be quite difficult to make. I had no idea which pieces of metal to use. I rummaged through my grandpa's toolbox again and again to find something I could use. I had to let go of the perfectionist in me again. I had to allow myself to think out of the box and be more abstract. Letting go and following this line of thought, I got the idea to make the hands out of key rings.

As if it's dancing

I tried to connect the squirrel with a hinge and metal wire to a piece of wood and then use epoxy glue to attach it. During the hardening of the glue, it move slightly into a weird angle, which made my mother comment: "It looks as if it's dancing." Hence the name...

I did lift it up a bit on one side though, so it is less at an angle.
