Bij deze vrije opdracht voor school wilde ik mijn middelbare schooltijd van vijf jaar samenvatten in een collage.

Wat mij bij het idee van een collage aansprak was om ondanks het gebruik van allemaal verschillende materialen het toch tot een samenhangend geheel te maken.

Twee gebouwen in een

Als centraal punt staan de twee schoolgebouwen waar ik les heb gehad. Ik wilde in de collage deze twee gebouwen laten zien, samengesteld uit foto's die ik in de vijf jaar op school heb verzameld. Ik heb daar tenslotte veel tijd doorgebracht. Voor de achtergrond heb ik de kleuren oranje, geel, groen en blauw gebruikt, omdat deze kleuren staan voor deze schoolperiode.

Hamsteren

Bij deze opdracht was het wel een uitdaging om allemaal spullen van die vijf jaar bij elkaar te zoeken. Gelukkig ben ik iemand die alles bewaart, waardoor ik na heel lang zoeken genoeg spullen bij elkaar had gevonden voor in het project.

Nieuwe inspiratie

Een paar maanden na het inleveren van de opdracht had ik weer nieuwe inspiratie om het te perfectioneren, omdat ik het nog te leeg vond. Ik had toen ook meer tijd om te zoeken naar bijvoorbeeld bonnetjes van dingen die ik op werkweek in Tsjechië en in Lille had gekocht.

Het hoeft niet zo perfect

Bij deze opdracht vond ik het lastig dat het allemaal niet zo perfect hoefde te zijn, het mocht allemaal wat slordiger. In de loop van dit project lukte het me uiteindelijk om de perfectionistische kant in mij wat los te laten, waardoor ik ook meer ideeën kreeg. Het werkte!

For the assignment of my choice I wanted to make a summary of my five years in high school. I chose to make a collage.

I opted for a collage, because I thought it was an exciting and challenging idea to try to turn it into a coherent piece, even though I was going to use all different kinds of material.

Two buildings in one

I went to class in two different buildings on the campus. Those are at the root of my idea. In the collage I wanted to show these two buildings, composed from pictures that I took during these five years. I did spend a lot of time there, didn't I? As background colours I chose orange, yellow, green and blue. These colours represent this period of time.

Hoarding

It was quite a challenge to collect all these memorabilia. Luckily, I'm quite the hoarder, so I managed to collect enough items for this project.

A few months after submitting this assignment I was inspired to finish it, because I thought it was a bit bare. I also had had more time to collect items I could use, like receipts of souvenirs I bought while on school trips to the Czech Republic and Lille (France).

No perfection needed

During this assignment I had to fight my need for perfection. I had to allow myself to leave it a bit messy. In the course of this project I was able to let go of this need of perfection. The result was a free flowing open mind and a lot of inspiration and new ideas. It worked!
