De kleuren vond ik nog wat te fel, daarom had ik er een white-wash over gedaan / I thought the colours were a bit too bright, that's why I put a white-wash over it.

Bij de opdracht 'Face-To-Face Book' dacht ik meteen aan een gezicht in een boek. Ik wist al vrij snel dat ik een gezicht uit een boek wilde snijden alleen nog niet precies hoe.

Ik ben naar de kringloopwinkel gegaan om een dik boek te vinden. Daarna heb ik bij de bouwmarkt scherpe mesjes gekocht. Toen ik eenmaal wist hoe ik het gezicht in het boek wilde hebben begon ik met het aan elkaar vastlijmen van alle pagina's. Daarna had ik hulplijnen getekend, zodat ik wist waar het wat dieper moest voor de schaduw.

Face-to-Face

Het oog, de wenkbrauw, de neus en de lippen heb ik uit een ander boek gesneden, omdat deze delen van het gezicht wat hoger liggen. Ik had ook al deze pagina's aan elkaar gelijmd en laten drogen. Toen het droog was, kon ik het snijden zoals ik wilde, omdat de pagina's toen niet meer los zouden laten.

Toen het gezicht af was, wilde ik het nog verven. Ik heb deze kleuren gekozen, omdat deze kleuren ´Face-to-Face' staan in de standaard kleurencirkel.

The 'Face-to-Face-Book' assignment made me think of a face inside a book right away. From the start I knew that I wanted to carve a face out of a book. All I needed to find out was how exactly do this.

So I went to the thriftshop to find myself a large book. After that I went to the home depot to get some sharp knives. Once I figured out how I wanted the face to be shaped I started glueing the pages together. After the guiding lines were drawn I knew where to cut deeper into the pages to accentuate the shadows.

Face-to-Face

The eyes, the brow, the nose and the lips were cut from another book because these parts are situated higher on the face and I therefore needed extra pages glued to the original book.

Once I finished the face, I wanted to paint it to really seal the deal. The colours used are the colours that are complementary, or are 'face-to-face' in the colour circle that can be found on this web page.
